The Pursuit of More: Lessons on Failure, Momentum & Solitude

If you DON’T Quit YOU won’t FAIL: Vol 1

This is a concept that has been in the back of my mind for quite some time now. If you don’t quit you wont fail. How I picture it, there are only so many attempts you can take at something before you succeed and the more you fail (attempt) the closer you get to succeeding. For example, lets say you want to get into med school and your path has been decided by some higher power that its going to take you 4 attempts to get in. NOW, each time you attempt to get into med school and fail you are knocking these attempts out of the way brining you closer to entering med school. If you were to quit then you would bring the process of removing the “attempts to success” to a grinding halt leading to absolute failure. When we look at things from this perspective absolute failure is not possible if we just don’t quit. Each attempt/fail is just brining us closer to finally achieving what we want. I believe this helps to reinforce the importance of failing and its positive nature.

If you DON’T Quit YOU won’t FAIL: Vol 2

Please read If you DON’T Quit YOU won’t FAIL: Vol 1 for the best understanding! I wanted to take some time to write a Vol 2 of this topic as I came across some evidence of this philosophy. Please consider these examples:

Frank Sinatra: 1,200 songs, 209 hits (17% success rate)

Babe Ruth: 8,399 attempts, 714 home runs (8.5% success rate)

Pablo Picasso: 150,000 pieces, 1,170 hits (0.7% success rate)

These are all examples of very success people that refused to quit and because they didn’t they eventually succeed. These are perfect examples showing that there is in fact a set amount of attempts that will be required from you in order to achieve success in any area. For Frank Sinatra that meant only 17% of his attempts were successful, it meant 8.5% for Babe Ruth, and only 0.7% for Picasso. The only thing that will stop you from success is how much determination, grit, and persistence your soul carries. If you tell yourself that you will not quit on your journey to becoming a Doctor, Lawyer, CEO, Founder, etc and you hold yourself to that YOU will be successful. There is nothing in this world that can stop someones devoted commitment to not quitting! Pursue More.

The Momentum Game: Vol 1

The best thing you can do RIGHT NOW is start. Im sure most of us have heard a variation of this before but what does it actually mean to start? An even better question is “where do I start”? I feel like so many people are blessed with fantastic ideas but never get to bring them into reality because they were never taught how to do so. Most of us were encouraged to be creative and to “use our imagination” as kids but very few learned how to actually bring those creative and imaginative ideas into the world. Sadly there is no easy way to fulfill your dreams, build that business, or become the best version of yourself. What you can do, is take a SMALL action right now. From my experience the most relevant things in my life started off very small and over a period of time they developed into something great. We have all heard that great things take time, and it is very true. The mistake most people make is they jump right into something and go all in, and within a couple of weeks they are burnt out and done (there is a time and a place to go all in). I suggest that you start very small and slowly gain momentum. Success is really just a momentum game. When I first started E. North I didn’t know how to build a website, ideas were barely half formed, and I would just post pictures of E. North clothing online. Now, I have started to right blogs, I post videos of myself on almost every social media platform out there, and I just recently started recording podcasts (available on Soundcloud and Youtube). When I first began I had no idea that these things would form but I had one huge advantage against everyone else, I actually STARTED. So, think about what you want to achieve and take a small step forward. If you take enough of these small steps over a period of time they will build into something unimaginable. So take action now, and begin to build your momentum (slowly).

The Importance of Time Alone.

Time alone (solitude) is such an important thing that less and less people are utilizing. To be clear, I am not talking about loneliness (feeling alienated from others). I am talking about choosing to be isolated which is proven to have great benefits. A 2021 study of 2,035 people across the United Kingdom examined what people learn and gain from spending time alone. The researchers compared there measurements of well-being, including self-determined motivation and peacefulness. Researchers found that 22.8% of adolescence, 54.7% of adults, and 53.8% of older adults experienced a greater sense of autonomy while alone. On top of this, the researchers identified that self-growth was a major theme that developed out of time alone (Among adults, 61.6% said that self-growth was a benefit of time alone). Participants described using solitude as a time to think about where there life is going, organize there thoughts and evaluate if they are on the right track.¹

NOW, take a moment to reflect on your own life. How much time do you spend alone? Are you someone who is simply “to” busy to be alone? Are you afraid to be alone? Research has proven that spending time alone can have a positive impact your life allowing you to fulfil it. I can tell you from my own experience that time alone has had a great impact on my life. For example, almost all of E. North by Ross was built by myself and alone. It gave me the best chance to think and self-reflect on my ideas. If you are struggling to find who you are, where your going, or even how to start “that thing” spend some time alone.
